Their mascot 'Lucky the Leprechaun' is an ode to the team's Irish heritage, as well as an ode to the historically large Irish population in Boston.The Boston Celtics were formed in 1946 by Boston Garden-Arena Corporation President Walter A. Brown as a team in the Basketball Association of America, and became part of the National Basketball Association (NBA) after the merger of the BAA and the National Basketball League in the fall of 1949.[5] In 1950, the Celtics became the first franchise to draft an African American player, signing Chuck Cooper.
